Lectures can be used to present information that would be difficult for the student to get in other ways, particularly if the students do not have the time required for research, or if they do not have access to reference material. I do not think that the students who asked this question knew what etymology was, but they were certainly exploring within that realm when they noticed the similarity in spelling.
