It was the nineteenth century German historian Georg Voigt (1827-91) who identified Petrarch as the first Renaissance humanist. The movement's founder, Felix Adler, a former member of the Free Religious Association, conceived of Ethical Culture as a new religion that would strip away the accumulated unscientific dogmas of traditional religions while retaining and elevating the ethical message at the heart of all religions. Wikipedia has two good articles on Humanism as life stance and Secular humanism as a philosophy. The ardor with which they broke away from the bonds and leading-strings of mediaeval tradition, the exuberance with which they celebrated the healing of the long feud between nature and human nature, obscured for a time the need of decorum and selection. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for a gender-specific rights movement in the western world and hasn’t been for quite some time now.

In fact the definition you use is from Wikipedia but with an important second part that you didn’t include: “Humanism is a group of philosophies and ethical perspectives which emphasize the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively, and generally prefers individual thought and evidence (rationalism, empiricism), over established doctrine or faith (fideism).” Wikipedia has more on the links between humanism and secularism, but if that’s not a legit enough source you can also go to humanist groups and sites like Humanism.ca: “Humanist Canada (also known as HC or the Humanist Association of Canada) is a national not-for-profit charitable organization promoting the separation of religion from public policy and fostering the development of reason, compassion and critical thinking for all Canadians through secular education and community support.” Or ihumanism.org, whose “10 Points of Humanism” emphasizes a reliance on science and rationality in half the points.
