In 1947, Kenneth Rexroth launched the San Francisco Renaissance, which fed into the San Francisco Beats. In 1973 Kurtz could plausibly ask if everyone was a humanist, but in 1980 humanism looked, even to its friends, more like a battered relic of the past, or, to its enemies, a vicious plot to undermine all that was best in America.
